Oulu Sports App Journey Overview

This is going to be the fourth post of my blog about our ECIP- course. This time I’m going to tell you about the journey in our applications development process. Our application is named the Oulu Sports App and it’s used to track and participate in various sports events. With our app it’s possible to find the nearest locations for exercising. And if you don’t want to sweat it is possible to find for example an ice hockey game so you can watch others sweating for you.

Because we are first year students, we don’t yet have the skillset required to actually make our app alive, so we have been focusing on the designing process. So basically everybody has been involved what it comes to designing, marketing and other important aspects on our process. In our team we have a flat hierarchy so there aren’t any so called managers. Our “development” process actually reminds me of those Agile methodologies. I consider myself as a “Scrum Master” of our team, supporting and facilitating the rest of the team.

Because we didn’t make a working application, I can’t really say I learned something about software development. But of course we were exposed to using the so called “soft-skills” which are very important part of software development too. So all the planning designing and negotiations about the possible features weren’t a waste of time. What I’m proud of is the agreement on almost everything. Everything was clear since starting this project. I think it’s because our group consist from individual who think the same way. So it was very easy to throw some ideas and taking the best ones in use. All in all this has been a fun experience but also it has been a frustrating one because all of the extra work on the side.

This is going to be my last on post on my blog because I didn’t find a new hobby from blogging. So, I wish you all the best. See you!

  1. Hello! Great blog post. Our group also unfortunately didn't have the skills to do the app/website but just like you said we learned soft skills and also some new English vocabulary. Also it was nice to hear that you found positive points and you found the journey of the project fun.

Have a good one and good luck to your studies!

  2. Like Teemu said, the skills to actually produce a functioning app weren't there, thus the teamwork skills we acquired in planning it were valuable. Good post.
