Oulu Sports App Journey Overview

This is going to be the fourth post of my blog about our ECIP- course. This time I’m going to tell you about the journey in our applications development process. Our application is named the Oulu Sports App and it’s used to track and participate in various sports events. With our app it’s possible to find the nearest locations for exercising. And if you don’t want to sweat it is possible to find for example an ice hockey game so you can watch others sweating for you. Because we are first year students, we don’t yet have the skillset required to actually make our app alive, so we have been focusing on the designing process. So basically everybody has been involved what it comes to designing, marketing and other important aspects on our process. In our team we have a flat hierarchy so there aren’t any so called managers. Our “development” process actually reminds me of those Agile methodologies. I consider myself as a “Scrum Master” of our team, supporting and facilitating the r...

The Epic Book Review

I read a book called Liar’s Poker. It is written by Michael Lewis and it is a semi-autobiographical book which tells the story of a bond trader at Wallstreet. I chose the book because I already had it on my bookshelf and because I have a strong interest towards the financial industry which this book is about. After receiving my degree in Computer Science I’m going to pursue a career in financial sector and actually I have already signed for a summer job in Nordea. So, the book tells the story of a bond trader. Trader is a person who buys and sells financial instruments aiming to make profit from them. The book tells about the protagonists’ experiences and thoughts about living and working on Wallstreet. It discusses about attitudes towards money and how success is declared. Even thought the book is about what happened in the mid 80s it is still considered as a classic what it comes to books about Wallstreet. Of course, things are today a little bit different than they were in ...

My first group project

In our ECIP course we were given a task to design and if possible, also develop an application. The app should be a health and exercise related and targeted for people of Oulu. So it should somehow make it easier to people to get exercising. In our group we thought that it’s not necessary to actually move with our app. So we are going to make a feature that will help the user to find also all kinds of “bench sport” events. Our main goal is to make people move more than usual. You don’t have to actually go jogging or go to the gym to get moving. Moving also consist about things like walking, doing yoga, walking your dog and so on. Even thought we want to get people moving more we want to also encourage those who still are sitting on couches. And that is why we provide a possibility to go watch other people to exercise. That is because watching sports could possibly be the spark which lights up the fire towards exercising. Feeling the victories or highlight performances ca...

Let me introduce myself

I’m a 22-years old guy from Oulu, Finland. I’ve lived in Oulu my whole life so far. Even thought, I’ve enjoyed my time here I feel like that in the future it would be refreshing for me to get some new experiences as an exchange student. Possible exchange locations could be Russia, USA or some South American countries. I spend my free time playing Finnish baseball and reading books. I’ve been into baseball since I was a child and currently, I’m playing it on the second highest tier as a semi-pro. The books I read are usually business related. Now I’m studying English at the ECIP- course and one of the exercises is to write a blog during the course. So now on I will keep writing it quite regularly and the topics will usually be tech-related. I got my high school diploma from Kastellin Urheilulukio (Kastelli Highschool of Sports) and after completing my military service I started my studies in University of Oulu. First my only goal was to get into the Oulu Business School and Comp...
