The Epic Book Review
I read a book called Liar’s Poker. It is written by Michael Lewis and it
is a semi-autobiographical book which tells the story of a bond trader at Wallstreet.
I chose the book because I already had it on my bookshelf and because I have a
strong interest towards the financial industry which this book is about. After
receiving my degree in Computer Science I’m going to pursue a career in financial
sector and actually I have already signed for a summer job in Nordea.
So, the book tells the story of a bond trader. Trader is a person who
buys and sells financial instruments aiming to make profit from them. The book tells
about the protagonists’ experiences and thoughts about living and working on
Wallstreet. It discusses about attitudes towards money and how success is
declared. Even thought the book is about what happened in the mid 80s it is
still considered as a classic what it comes to books about Wallstreet. Of
course, things are today a little bit different than they were in the 80s, but
it is still fun to notice that on the other hand some things aren’t. Like the
fact that Wallstreet bankers today are still obsessed with money and sacrificing
their free time for a job which they don’t actually even like…
The book is interesting because it tells an insiders’ story from the
industry. Usually people who work for the Wallstreet firms are not interested
to share their experiences or thoughts about their job because they fear they
could get fired. Because my personal interest towards the financial world I
know something about it and I can relate to most of the content in the book. So,
in other words I agree with the author.
Unfortunately, the book is about financial industry as you may have
noticed so I couldn’t really get anything which could be applied to our group
project. I just read it for fun as a hobby. The 80s bond traders’ experiences don’t
really help with our group project today.
This was my book review about Liar’s Poker and we shall see in the next
time!
Great blog post!
VastaaPoistaThis book sure sounds like an interesting read and it was great to hear how you have personal passions and goals on the field in question. IT and finances do go together quite nicely and I'm glad to hear that you have already secured a summer job which clearly sparks your interest.
Hi,
VastaaPoistaThe book sounds interesting to read. The current situation has pulled the stock markets down quite a bit, so we can see where the situation is changing.
Fun to see there's someone else besides me interested in the stock market and trading in general. And considering you said "even though the book is about the 80's" i firmly believe that if we don't learn from our mistakes and/or history we're doomed to repeat it, thus making history an important part of trading and studying the markets. Good read.
