Let me introduce myself

I’m a 22-years old guy from Oulu, Finland. I’ve lived in Oulu my whole life so far. Even thought, I’ve enjoyed my time here I feel like that in the future it would be refreshing for me to get some new experiences as an exchange student. Possible exchange locations could be Russia, USA or some South American countries. I spend my free time playing Finnish baseball and reading books. I’ve been into baseball since I was a child and currently, I’m playing it on the second highest tier as a semi-pro. The books I read are usually business related. Now I’m studying English at the ECIP- course and one of the exercises is to write a blog during the course. So now on I will keep writing it quite regularly and the topics will usually be tech-related.

I got my high school diploma from Kastellin Urheilulukio (Kastelli Highschool of Sports) and after completing my military service I started my studies in University of Oulu. First my only goal was to get into the Oulu Business School and Computer Science in Oulu was my “backup plan” which I never really considered seriously. I didn’t make to the business school on my first attempt and at the same time got accepted to the computer science program so I had to make a decision whether to keep reading for the business or enroll to the computer science and I chose the latter one. So far studying computer science has been very very interesting because everything is new for me. I don’t have any previous experience what it comes to programming, software engineering or processing information.

My best (and only) project so far is the ATM machine we coded on the Introduction to Programming-course. Even thought it might not be the most beautiful piece of software I’m still proud of it because it was a challenge which I jumped in and succeeded. First I was a little bit scared because everything was so new to me but after a numerous moments of frustration a finally got it done. Maybe the biggest challenges were to get to know about the C -languages syntax and learning to think like a programmer. Also I made it all alone so that might have made my first project a lot more challenging. But now after taking the first step I’m more than eager to learn more about programming and to widen my knowledge.

My goal in English studies is to learn how to communicate professionally with others and to widen my academic vocabulary. I think that the ongoing group project, exercises and this blog will help me to achieve it. Learning the professional vocabulary and communication skills will help me to get my dream job from a tech-related field.

Till next time!

  1. Nice text! You can be proud of yourself to have come so far now, as I had the same sort of story with enrolling to this subject being the back up plan haha. I wish I could have kept up the interest like you did and even tried to get through the frustration. Keep going! :-)
